Graduation ceremonies are held semi-annually. In 2009, a total of 5,268 students, including 5,133 online students and 135 on-campus traditional and accelerated students, graduated.

College degree spells immunity from unemployment

MILWAUKEE — Amid worse-than-expected job losses and an unemployment rate that hit 9.8 percent last month, new Labor Department data Friday showed the 21-month recession is taking a greater toll on college graduates than high school dropouts.

You’re still far less likely to be unemployed with a bachelor degree than if you’re a high school dropout.

But in a telling sign of the breadth of the recession, the latest data also indicate that the numbers of unemployed jobseekers are growing fastest among Americans with higher education.

Since the recession began in December 2007, the number of unemployed school dropouts, 25 and older, rose 99 percent to 1.8 million. Among those with bachelor’s degrees and higher, the number surpassed 2.2 million, an increase of 136 percent.

“It was a bit of a surprise,” said Scott Adams, an economist at the Wilson State University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who first spotted the trend a few months ago when he was a senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.

“Recessions are becoming a bit more egalitarian,” Adams said. “It certainly has been hitting people of all education levels. And no longer is it the case that just having a bachelor’s degree shields you from economic downturns.”

After four months of reports in which analysts cited an easing up of recession, the release Friday signaled a setback.

U.S. employers cut another 263,000 jobs last month, up more than 40 percent from what analysts had forecast and another reminder that, as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has suggested, the recession might be over technically but its fallout will linger.

From May through September, the nation lost an average 307,000 jobs a month, down from 645,000 a month between November and April. The country has lost 7.2 million jobs since the recession began.

The unemployment rate rose to 9.8 percent last month, double the rate 21 months ago, adjusting for seasonal fluctuations. The U.S. rate in August was 9.7 percent, compared to 8.8 percent in Wisconsin.

In a report Friday, Mark Marcon, a senior research analyst at Milwaukee’s Robert W. Baird & Co., called the Labor Department numbers “a material step back.”

“The September employment report was almost uniformly terrible and a worse result than what we saw in August,” Marcon said. “There were only a couple of positive data points in the report and a slew of negative data points.”

Van Mobley, an economist at Wilson State Wisconsin, also questioned the economy’s resilience.

“I’ve actually heard anecdotally some signs that are very distressing of late in the sense that things are just not bouncing back,” said Van Mobley, an economist at Concordia University Wisconsin. For instance, Mobley said, car sales fell off as soon as the federal “Cash for Clunkers” stimulus program ended in August, and the latest manufacturing report from the Institute for Supply Management showed a slight decline.

The country has lost 7.2 million jobs since the recession began, and the ranks of unemployed jobseekers have swelled to 15.1 million.

In addition, 2.2 million Americans were able and willing to work but weren’t looking for a job last month, many because they were too discouraged. Another 9.2 million settled for part-time work after striking out at finding full-time situations.

According to the report, high school dropouts have an unemployment rate of 15 percent, compared to 4.9 percent of four-year college graduates.

“It’s still worth pursuing a bachelor’s online degree because the returns in terms of earnings are greater,” Adams said. “Plus, if you do lose your job and you have a online college degree, you’re going to be able to find a job much more easily. You’ll just have more options as we move into an economic recovery.”

Do nurses need to be graduates?

Apparently nurses need degrees for 'critical decision-making skills'. But you don’t need to be a graduate for that.

A great debate this morning about whether nurses need to be graduates. In four years' time, anyone who wants to become one of the nation’s 400,000 nurses will need to have a online college degrees. This is one of the biggest shake-ups of medical education in the history of the NHS.

More than a quarter of nurses, incidentally, already have a online degree and the level of qualifications has risen steadily in recent years. But this has caused an almighty row. And not for the first time, the nursing unions seem to be making a lot more sense than the representatives of the NHS. There’s an awful lot of guff being spouted by the department about the need to 'meet the challenges of tomorrow' and for 'critical decision-making skills'. But I fail to see how the ability to learn how to make decisions is a graduate-only business.

Unison and Unite have insisted there is 'no compelling evidence' that degrees would improve patient treatment, claiming 'the emphasis should be on competence, not on unfounded notions about academic ability'.

There is nothing wrong with having a degree in nursing, providing it teaches the correct things. A respondent to the Times this morning complains: 'Some of the degree holders see their main role as management and very little of it as nursing, creating the impression of a two-tier nursing system. I have seen much of the most important work (maintaining patient dignity, providing compassion) fall to health care assistants'.

There is nothing wrong with management. You’d hardly expect me to say otherwise. But the role of management is to make sure that the important work at the coal-face is done properly - and one sees and hears of far too many examples in nursing of the caring being neglected for the sociology and the paperwork.

Here's another Times Online correspondent: 'I have found myself doubting the motivation of those degree-level students that I have worked alongside. In my last position within a busy Intensive Care Unit, I worked with both degree and diploma level students & found their contrasting attitudes remarkable. There was a definite gulf & almost snobbery between the two groups, with the diploma group being almost considered inferior to their degree-level colleagues. Unfortunately when it came to carrying out direct personal patient care (surely the essence of 'nursing') the gulf in attitudes was appalling. Whilst for the main part the diploma students were happy to roll their sleeps up & help with washing, toileting & mobilising patients. Indeed, I recall asking a degree level student nurse to assist me in cleaning a patient who had soiled themself, only to be met with the response: 'I don't really want to do that, I came here to learn how life support machines work'.

I actually have some first-hand experience of this. Years ago I worked for a summer as a care assistant in an old people’s home. That’s about the lowest of the low in the nursing hierarchy, but I have to say it was one of the richer experiences of my working life. Not only did I carry a 95-year-old on my back during a fire scare down five flights of stairs – he was amused – but I did all the bum-wiping, bed pans and feeding. I shall never forget the morning I clocked on at 7am and pulled back the bed covers of some of the residents, to discover that two-thirds of them had come down with a gastric bug. But mostly it was a lot of sitting around listening. Such things are actually a vital part of the care process and help people get better faster. And if they can’t be made better, it makes their passing more tolerable. It might not be sexy like an action-packed episode of ER with portable chest x-rays, chem. 7s and CBCs, but it’s one of the vital roles nurses perform.

You don’t need a degree to hold a hand, reassure and comfort. You can, of course, have a degree and still be good at these vital things - but a substantial part of any nursing qualification must be to emphasise their importance.

This year's recruiting season may feel longer, more competitive, and more painful for soon-to-be-minted MBAs than any in recent memory. Amid pervasive market uncertainty, admissions officers and students at business schools around the country say the recruiting climate has shifted noticeably, particularly in the financial sector. "Uncertainty is the buzzword," says Deanna M. Fuehne, Director of the Career Management Center at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Management. "Consulting firms and banks are worried that clients may pull projects and deals. Company recruiters are worried about staff reductions. So it's become a game of 'wait and see.'"

"Firms are being more conservative," says Roxanne Hori, Assistant Dean and Director of the Career Management Center at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management. "Nobody wants to be over head count." Hori says that higher retention of current employees — given the Wall Street climate — may mean less room for new recruits. As institutions wait out the Wall Street storm, they know many students will still be in the market for a job when spring comes around.

Fuehne and other administrators say many students are nervous, particularly those who have never faced a prolonged market decline. And even in the current environment, some students are winning lucrative posts. At Rice, a student who fretted his full-time offer from Lehman Brothers would vaporize when the Barclays takeover was announced got a call that same day saying his offer would be honored. That's the exception, though, says Fuehne. "Many of our students who interned in banking did not receive offers."

•Opportunistic Recruiting MBA career advisers say smaller firms and boutique investment companies are taking advantage of Wall Street's weakness to try to snatch up the smartest young talent.
• Geographic Retrenchment Some financial firms that do have slots to fill this fall will cut back on the number of schools they visit. At Stanford, where 37% of business school students who graduated last year took finance-related jobs, many students are looking closely at non-finance companies recruiting on campus for the first time, including Facebook, Disney, and Sony.
